Photo Of The Day: Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle, the castle that inspired Walt Disney when he designed Cinderella’s Castle, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany. Situated on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Neuschwanstein Castle was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria, also referred to as the "Mad King", as a retreat and as homage to Richard Wagner, the King's inspiring muse.

I took this photo from the all squeaky two person wide old wooden bridge called Marienbruecke that lays across the way deep rocky gorge behind Neuschwanstein Castle. I have to admit I was quite afraid as the bridge was moving every time the other visitors were walking on it. But the amazing views of the castle and its surroundings were worth it.

  3. @Kimmy, building Neuschwanstein Castle almost ruined the country, so there must be something about this place that inspires people to do crazy things ;)

  7. Wow, that place is cool. I had no idea that the Disney castle was based on a real place in Germany!

Not surprising that it nearly ruined the county, looks like some of the place is gold-clad!

  8. This is very beautiful castle in Germany. The castle was built by Ludwig II, King of Bavaria. Neuschwanstein is quite famous because of the castle's incredible mountain surroundings and architecture. Although the Castle was designed to look medieval, it had quite modern refinements. It is amazing castle.

  9. That's quite the impressive structure. I can see why Walt Disney used it in designing Cinderella's castle.
