Laura Dekker Starts Youngest Sail Around The World

Laura Dekker, the youngest sail around the world
On Saturday, Laura Dekker, a 14 years old Dutch solo sailor and her boat "Guppy" left Gibraltar for what she hopes it will become the youngest sail around the world. She announced her plan to circumnavigate the globe as the youngest person on record in 2009 but the Dutch authorities opposed due to her young age. However, in July 2010, a Dutch family court permitted the record breaking attempt to start.

Laura Dekker is heading now for Canary Islands and plans to spend at least two months there. Her journey will last two years and she will make stops in quite a few places, like Bonaire, Curacao, Galapagos, Bali, Maldives and Egypt among others. So if you live in any of the places on her route you can go greet her!

Laura Dekker was born on a boat off the coast of New Zealand, during a seven-year trip of her parents. The love for the sea and the spirit of adventure seems to run in the family! Laura spent the first four years of her life at sea and at six she already had her first boat and learned to sail it herself.

Currently the youngest sail non-stop and unassisted around the world belongs to the Australian Jessica Watson with 16 years and 362 days, thought unofficially as her route did not meet World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC) criteria for circumnavigation of the globe.

  1. Wow, seems to be a trend for the youngest sailor RTW. I remember a few months ago the media was all hot with Jessica. Good luck Laura!

  4. @Jolly Princess,
sorry, but from Laura Dekker's route map it doesn't look like she will make a stop in Philippines. From Darwin she will go to Bali and then to Singapore. Maybe you can go on a trip to meet her when she passes by :)
