The New airberlin Christmas Aircraft & My 5 Seconds of Fame

Christmas is our favorite time of the year, therefore we were both excited beyond words about going on a Christmas trip to Germany in partnership with airberlin. We had been told there would be a surprise waiting for us in one of the private hangars in the Dusseldorf Airport and this seriously piqued our curiosity.

The surprise turned out to be the unveiling of this cute airberlin aircraft decorated in Christmas livery with the ‘Flying home for Christmas’ motto written on it. What a magical moment it was when we first laid our eyes on it and the team of Santas affectionately cleaning the Boeing 737-800! It was love at first sight and I felt an overwhelming urge to get on board and go anywhere it would take me.

The airberlin Christmas aircraft will fly over the European sky between November 18 and December 23. Its route will systematically change, but you can check its flight schedule here.
The design of the Christmas plane resembles a string of 24 lights representing the 24 little doors of the Advent calendar, but on the evening flights the candles will lit up with light from inside the cabin creating a magical sight.

Oh, and did you know airberlin is Santa’s favorite airline for its red and white colors?

The headrest covers inside the plane were also specially designed in the Christmas spirit and in between photos we had the chance to taste the currywurst they serve on their flights as well. It’s no exaggeration if I say it was the best we’ve had so far and a must order. The airberlin chef prepares it exclusively for the German airline and you won’t find it anywhere else.
But down to a personal level, my 5 seconds of fame came while Andi of My Beautiful Adventures was taking a photo of me with the Santas. They all gathered around me, and while some were looking up my name on the naughty or nice list, others were searching deep inside their bags for presents. It seems that I’ve been good this year, because I ended up with a dozen Christmas edition airberlin chocolate hearts from Rausch.

Other photographers present rushed to take pictures of me and the Santas as well, and to be honest, I’m restlessly curious to find out if a photo of me posing with the Santas was published anywhere in the online or the offline world.

My husband on the other hand totally missed my moment of fame, but I will have to forgive him because at the exact same time he was having a blast inside the cockpit of the Christmas plane. He claims this was his favorite part of the trip, and for the sake of a happy marriage, I guess I’ll have to let him get away with it (guys!).

On the way back we passed by this gorgeous Christmas tree in the Dusseldorf airport. And while my favorite ornaments were the airberlin heart shaped chocolates hanging from the branches, I have to admit I loved even more the fact that they spread hundreds of chocolate hearts around the tree for the taking.
They say airberlin is an airline with a heart, and I’m sure no chocolate lover will argue against it.

  • If the pilot and copilot participated and all the stewards were dressed as elves... I'd definitely book that flight :-)

'Tis the season to be jolly!

  • I've flown Air Berlin a few times visiting friends in Berlin and always had a great experience(although I can't say I get invited to aircraft unveilings haha).

They're a little on the higher end of budget airlines but when your only other options are Easyjet or Ryanair, paying a little extra is definitely worth it, and they actually have decent leg room in their planes!

    • Oh, and you get candies, and free drinks and snacks when flying with airberlin, plus your head doesn't hurt at the end of the trip from all the commercials and lottery tickets they try to sell - that's what I hate most about budget airlines.

    • I heart them too. It's actually the first airline I flew with that didn't give me ear pain (I usually can't survive a flight without Ibuprofen)

  • Look at you with all those Santas! Very cute. I'll let you know if I see any pics published elsewhere. I can't tell you how much I'd love to fly on the Christmas aircraft. I'll be in Europe for several days in December. Hmmmm....
