Kobo Aura ONE My New Travel Companion

with 7 Comments

I like to pack light when I travel and bring with me only the minimum required. But there is one thing that I cannot give up when I travel – my e-reader. I know I could read on an app on my mobile, but I simply love the experience of reading on an e-reader too much.

So I always end up packing an e-reader in my bag. Lately, I have been wishing for a new high-quality e-reader with a larger screen closer to the size of a standard book, and so I found the Kobo Aura One. It stands out from the crowd, as all the other e-book readers have a 6-inch screen, including all the current competition models.

Kobo‘s latest premium device with its 7.8-inch screen will look and feel huge and amazing if you’ve been used to a Kindle, or pretty much any other e-reader. The text of your e-book will no longer feel cramped on a small screen.

I spend a lot of time in front of the laptop screen. My eyes get strained, and so at night time, I don’t feel like reading an ebook on my mobile or on my iPad. I prefer an e-reader that doesn’t tire my eyes.

This brings me to a great feature of the Aura ONE. Its screen features Kobo’s new RGB front lighting technology, ComfortLight Pro. It is designed to help you get to sleep easier and sleep better after you’ve been looking at the screen while reading at night.

Design and Features

Design-wise, the Kobo Aura One feels like a premium product. The back panel is covered in dimpled plastic that makes gripping it easy. I love the rubberized rear panel for extra grip which also makes it feel extra comfortable to hold. There are no thick bezels that dip around the screen, like on some cheaper ebook readers. It’s also one of the thinnest e-readers you can buy at 6.9mm.

I love the position of the power switch on the rear of the device, as it is easy to hit when you need to turn the Auro One on and off.

With its 7.8-inch HD e-ink touchscreen it’s so large it could pass for an iPad Mini. The screen is high-quality as well, with a resolution of 1872 x 1404. That’s 300 dots per inch, meaning text is clear and easy to read, and the book artwork looks great; and the viewing angles are perfect.

Kobo Aura One has front lighting technology. This enables you to read in comfort in all kinds of lighting conditions, and the device is a joy to use even in bright sunshine.

I find it great that I can bring my whole collection of books with me on any trip, just by packing a small device. I don’t need internet connection everywhere I go.

The Kobo Aura One has 8GB of onboard storage, there’s enough space for about 6000 books! Who in the world needs to carry that many books around? It’s more than enough memory space for everyone. Even if you are into manga and you want to put a whole collection on it, you should still have enough space.

Haven’t I mention it before? Yes, the Kobo Aura ONE displays manga. Think of the small the size of most manga books. Any of those will be displayed perfectly on Aurra ONE. As most of them are in black and white, you won’t feel that you are missing anything for not reading them in paper format.

Yes, at home you might prefer the paper manga books. However, on a trip, it is much more comfortable to have them in digital format on the Kobo.

Kobo has kept things nice and simple. The home page displays the book you’re currently reading at the top-left, and you can tap it to go straight to the page you were on. When reading you tap the right or left of the screen to go forward or backward. To come out of a book, or to change settings, you tap in the middle of the screen to bring up the relevant options.

There is one more detail that I like about Kobo readers in general. Kobo doesn’t lock you in an ecosystem, meaning you can load your device with content from anywhere, making it as versatile and accessible as possible for use.

The Kobo Aura One has a waterproof design. For those that want to take their reading everywhere including wet places, the Aura one is certified at IPX8, meaning it can handle water up to 2m deep for up to 60 minutes. That’s amazing! I can take it with me at the beach or at the pool. I can also enjoy reading while having a long relaxing bath.

Verdict

The Kobo Aura One’s main feature is its size. This is different to any other e-reader I have seen lately, and if you’ve always thought the current crop of devices were a bit small for your liking then this is the perfect e-reader you’ve been waiting for.

This is the best so far from Kobo and with waterproofing, ambient light sensor and a bigger screen, it definitely puts the Aura One ahead of the competition.

I cannot bring my mini iPad to the beach. This Kobo seems to be just perfect for that.
