UK breaks: taking advantage of the great outdoors

with No Comments

It might have its critics, but when it comes to the great outdoors it would be fair to say that the UK is right up there with the best. A relaxing weekend away is generally only a couple of hours away from wherever in the country you are – and this is something that a lot of people tend to forget.

Rather than focusing on exact locations through the country, today’s post will instead look at the various ways you can spend a relaxing time with the family, or friends. In truth, they can be done all over the country, but there are a few pointers if you are stuck for ideas.

Golf

Some might describe it as an old British classic after all the home of golf does happen to be up in Scotland. Whatever your views in that regard, few would disagree that the UK does boast some of the most stunning courses in the country. Sure, most of you will only enjoy if accompanied with decent weather, but whether you are in the North, Midlands or South there are countless courses which can be placed in the world class category.

A lot of these courses are now on larger resorts though, and offer extra activities to complete your weekend. The Belfry falls into said category and as well as offering a Ryder Cup golf course, there’s a spa to relax the weekend away as well.

Hiking

If you take away the clubs, there are plenty of locations in the country which offer an unparalleled hiking experience as well.

Sure, you might get better weather if you take your hiking boots abroad, but it’s worth mentioning that a lot of people actually visit the UK just to take advantage of its glorious hikes.

Again, most areas of the country will have excellent walks, but regions such as the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, Peak District and Devon offer some of the best.

It should go without saying at this point that if cycling is more your thing, you can easily take two wheels to said locations and explore them that way instead.

City break

Some might argue that a city break isn’t strictly the right way to enjoy the outdoors in the UK, but we’re going to disagree.

If you are looking for something a little more relaxing, that perhaps doesn’t involve physical excursion for large portions of the day, a city break could be the ideal ‘outdoor’ solution.

London often grabs all of the headlines in this regard, but it’s not the only city. Bath is exceptionally popular amongst tourists thanks to its picturesque center, while if you want to head north and experience a little more hustle and bustle both Newcastle and Manchester are highly regarded. Alternatively, seaside towns such as Brighton are huge favorites amongst visitors as well.

All options will at least allow you to spend time outdoors, whilst popping in for a coffee or whatever takes your fancy when it all gets a little too much.
